Abstract

This study explores the impact of coaching during mergers & acquisitions (M&A) and is based on constructivist grounded theory. While M&As have been an important growth strategy for many decades, few M&As have achieved the desired outcome. Many M&As leave a trail of emotional destruction throughout the affected organisations, requiring years of recovery. This qualitative study focuses on the exploration of coaching as a tool to positively impact M&A outcomes. This study draws upon insights from a combination of literature review, and personal interviews conducted with experienced M&A experts, representing different industries and cultures.Leadership and culture are consistently mentioned as the most impactful themes. The study disclosed potential risks and limitations associated with coaching and provided sufficient evidence to reinforce the significance of contracting and defined metrics. Different coaching profiles and methodologies are illustrated to address the aspects of M&As.
