How can I develop an integrated approach in my coaching?
Abstract
Coaching has grown dramatically over the past two decades to the point where most managers, trainers, facilitators and consultants describe part of what they do as ‘coaching’. However, any examination of practice reveals many coaches are using a one-size-fits-all approach: a standard formula for every person and every problem. Research with the most experienced coaches (Passmore, 2007) suggests these coaches use a range of different approaches, selecting the appropriate tool for the person and the problem they are working with. They adapt and flex to meet their client’s needs and select the most effective approach to help. But how can coaches integrate the wide range of different coaching approaches available to help their clients become the best they can be? In this chapter, I offer one way to bring together different approaches, which enables the coach to offer an integrated practice, allowing them to flex and adapt to their client’s needs.
