How can I use reflections in my coaching practice?
Abstract
While much is talked about in coaching about the role of active listening and open questions, the other friends from the communication gang of six are often forgotten or at least neglected: affirmations, summaries, reflections and the role of silence. Yet all six are essential communications for the coach, and from what we callAL-OARSS. In this chapter we will focus on two: summaries and reflections. The terms are often confused and thus we will aim to illustrate what each is and when to use them, as well as explore the different forms of reflection that the coach can use. If a coach is able to master the use of these, alongside the use of active listening and open questions, they are well on their journey towards becoming an effective coach.
